Penn State Extension to host various programs for American Heart Month

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — February is American Heart Month, a time when the nation raises awareness about heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States.

To recognize this observance, Penn State Extension is offering several in-person workshops and webinars focused on small lifestyle changes to improve heart health.

The in-person workshops and virtual webinars are as follows:

— “Exploring the DASH Diet to Lower Your Blood Pressure,” noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 4. This webinar will explore how the DASH plan can help participants support heart health, manage blood pressure and enjoy nutritious foods without special products or restrictions. — “Let’s Cook for a Healthy Heart,” occurring at multiple locations. During this in-person workshop, participants will explore the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. This flexible eating plan incorporates whole grains, fruits and vegetables to help treat and prevent high blood pressure. This workshop also is available as a virtual webinar. — “Let’s Cook Mediterranean,” occurring at multiple locations. Participants will learn the basics of the Mediterranean diet, how to prepare authentic Mediterranean dishes, practical shopping tips and simple cooking methods. — “Mediterranean Cuisine Comes to You.” In this online course, participants will explore what the Mediterranean lifestyle entails and the scientific evidence supporting its proven health benefits. Participants will learn how to incorporate the culinary aspects of the Mediterranean diet by using local foods and seasonings. Each section of the course addresses a specific food topic and includes recipes to try. Register here for "Mediterranean Cuisine Comes to You."
