‘Home Food Preservation’ workshops, webinars to be hosted by Extension in September

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — This September, Penn State Extension will offer a series of workshops and webinars for anyone interested in preserving food at home to learn food preservation methods and best practices.

Preserving food at home can be done for several reasons, including saving money, preserving seasonal produce or learning food safety practices, noted organizers, who added that seasoned experts and beginners alike can gain valuable food-preservation skills.

Instructors will present research-based information to dispel food preservation myths, identify unsafe practices, and offer practical tips to help participants have a positive experience when preserving food at home.

The series includes live webinars on topics such as drying foods, wild game and charcuterie accompaniments. These topics also are available as instructional workshops across the state.

Previous topics such as tomatoes and salsa, fermented pickles and sauerkraut, freezing, hands-on pickling, pressure canning and water bath canning will be repeated next year.

Workshop and webinar registration dates vary by event; workshops have a $15 registration fee and webinars have a $5 registration fee. Recordings of webinars will be sent to participants who are unable to attend the live events.

Penn State employees may be eligible for discounts; see individual course pages for details.

For more information, participants can find workshop and webinar registration on the Penn State Extension website.
