UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — "One Million Scholar's Chip" is the winning flavor of a Penn State Berkey Creamery contest that commemorates the one millionth degree awarded this summer by the University.

The historic threshold was crossed Aug. 15, during summer commencement ceremonies at the University Park campus.

The flavor will be available beginning Aug. 24, the first day of the fall semester, through the end of the calendar year, according to Doug Thomas, operations manager for the Creamery.

“We’re honored to be a part of the one millionth degree celebration,” he said. “The Creamery is a staple with many of our students, alumni and the Penn State community. We’ve been part of the University for 161 years and are happy to provide a product that brings smiles and joy to so many people.”

Penn State is the commonwealth’s first and only land-grant institution — founded as the Farmers’ High School in 1855. The Creamery first opened in 1865.

One Million Scholar's Chip was voted the winning flavor by the University community, from a pool of finalists that included the flavors One Milla Vanilla Bean, Million Strong Strawberry, Millionth Degree Mint Nittany and One Mil Grilled Stickies.

The Creamery describes the winning flavor as a “sweet and flavorful vanilla ice cream that gets a boost from extra vanilla bean and chocolate chips."

Penn State's Berkey Creamery, the largest university creamery in the United States, produces ice cream, cheese, milk, yogurt and sour cream, as well as a variety of other products, such as juices, lemonade and iced teas, made for sale and distribution to the University community.

Cows from Penn State’s dairy herd provide milk for the Creamery’s fresh dairy products, averaging about four days from cow to Creamery treat. For more information, visit creamery.psu.edu.
