UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Office of Faculty Affairs has announced the selection of two faculty members for the inaugural Faculty Affairs Residency Program. LaWanda Ward, associate professor of education and director of the Center for the Study of Higher Education, and Heather Shoenberger, associate professor of advertising and public relations, will begin their residencies in spring 2026, contributing to strategic projects that support faculty success across the University.

During the residency, Ward will focus on analyzing data from the COACHE survey to help identify actionable strategies for enhancing the faculty experience. Her scholarship on equity in higher education, academic freedom and justice-oriented policy offers essential perspective for understanding and addressing the needs of Penn State faculty.

Shoenberger will lead the development of AI learning modules designed to help faculty and staff engage with emerging technologies in teaching, research and service. A recognized leader in generative AI (artificial intelligence) education, she brings extensive experience in academic programming and interdisciplinary initiatives focused on the ethical use of AI in communication.

“The Faculty Affairs Residency Program is an exciting new opportunity for faculty to contribute meaningfully to the university while gaining insight into academic leadership and institutional strategy,” said Kathy Bieschke, senior vice provost for faculty affairs. “Drs. Ward and Shoenberger bring valuable expertise to this work, and I look forward to the impact they will make through their residency projects.”

Launched this year, the Faculty Affairs Residency Program offers selected faculty the opportunity to engage directly with high-impact institutional initiatives while deepening their understanding of university operations. More information about the program is available on the Office of Faculty Affairs website.
