Faculty Senate passes revisions to grading policies and systems

UNIVERSITY PARK – During its second meeting of the spring semester, the Penn State Faculty Senate passed several legislative reports related to revising the University’s grading systems and policies, including updates to the method of calculating grade points and cumulative grade point average and distributing course syllabi.

These policy updates are all part of the senate’s comprehensive effort to evaluate the University’s grades and grade-related policies, which began during January plenary meeting. The senate also discussed policies on deferred and corrected grades, before voting to move those topics to the March meeting for further deliberation. Reports on the basis for grades and online student progress reports were referred back to the Senate Committee on Education for additional work.

The senate also passed an advisory/consultative report related to the Academic Portfolio and Program Review (APPR) process and heard updates from University leadership and from the J. Jeffrey and Ann Marie Fox Graduate School.

The meeting agenda, and all associated materials, including a meeting recording, are available through the senate website.
