UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — At its final meeting of the 2025-26 cycle, Penn State’s Faculty Senate passed a legislative report on “core” pass/fail grading policies for undergraduate students taking undergraduate courses. This report, which is part of a larger policy system aimed at modernizing Penn State’s grading policies, is the culmination of legislative work throughout the semester and years of efforts to enact updated pass/fail grading policies.
The report passed with 67 votes to accept and 33 to reject. These policies now move to the implementation phase, which will be a coordinated effort between the Administrative Council for Undergraduate Education (ACUE), the Office of the University Registrar, and the LionPATH Development and Maintenance Organization (LDMO). This work will be undertaken over the next couple semesters with ongoing consultation with Faculty Senate leadership.
The senate also approved minor updates to its constitution regarding senate membership, as well as a clarification to its bylaws about eligibility to serve as retired Faculty Senators. Legislative revisions to policies on disenrollment and exceptions to degree requirements were approved, along with an advisory/consultative report on supporting faculty engagement with Fulbright Program opportunities.
The senate also heard updates from University leadership and a presentation about efforts to promote civic engagement among students this fall from the Office for General Education.
