Course questionnaires now open for anonymous feedback

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Undergraduate and graduate students can now give anonymous feedback on their courses through the Student Educational Experience Questionnaire (SEEQ). SEEQs close on May 3.

Students can fill out a SEEQ for each course they are enrolled in. The questionnaires are one component of how faculty are evaluated by their academic unit heads and instructional units.

Students will see both open-ended and Likert scale (1-5 rating) questions. Only some questions are used as part of the instructor’s review and are clearly labeled as such. The remaining questions are for instructor feedback only.

SEEQs, like the Midsemester Student Educational Experience Questionnaires (MSEEQs), are anonymous. While students will need to log in to see the SEEQ for each course they are enrolled in, submitted answers are stripped of their identifying information before being sent to faculty and instructional units.

Instructors can consult the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence’s guide to talking about the SEEQ. Discussing the SEEQ with students can help them understand the importance of the questionnaire and improve response rates. Instructors can discuss their SEEQ results with a Schreyer Institute faculty consultant by emailing site@psu.edu. Instructors also may use a slide with a QR code to allow class time for students to complete the SEEQ.

The SEEQ replaced the Student Rating of Teaching Effectiveness (SRTE) in fall 2023. Together with the MSEEQ, it is a key component of Penn State’s Faculty Teaching Assessment Framework. The framework was developed through the work of the University Faculty Senate. The Standing Advisory Committee for the Assessment of Teaching Effectiveness, which oversees implementation of the framework, will continue gathering feedback from the Penn State community to further improve both the MSEEQ and SEEQ.

Colleges, campuses and departments may request marketing materials for the SEEQs by contacting the Office of Strategic Communications for Undergraduate Education and Faculty Affairs at uecommunications@psu.edu.
