ABINGTON, Pa. — Erin Foley, director of Athletics, Intramurals and Recreation at Penn State Abington, will return to serve another term as vice chair of the United East Conference's athletic directors for the 2026-27 academic year.
Foley's appointment places the campus in a key leadership position within the NCAA Division III conference and reflects the Philadelphia region campus's ongoing commitment to providing student-athletes with opportunities to excel in competition, leadership, and personal and professional development.
"Erin's service in a leadership role at the conference level gives us an important voice in shaping NCAA Division III athletics, while also providing Abington and United East student-athletes with the best possible experience,” Abington Chancellor Gary Liguori said.
“Participating in college athletics also gives students unmatched opportunities to develop leadership skills, build confidence, and learn to work collaboratively, which are key components of the Abington Experience and will serve them well as they launch their careers," he continued.
In addition to Foley, the United East leadership structure includes Wesley Fugate, president of Wilson College, and Elizabeth Meade, president of Cedar Crest College, who will serve as chair and vice chair of the Presidents' Council, respectively. Ashley Wagner, director of Athletics and Wellness at Notre Dame of Maryland University, will serve as chair of the athletic directors.
This summer, the United East Conference announced the addition of Centenary, Gwynedd Mercy, Immaculata, and Marymount universities as full members, bringing the conference's total core membership to 17.
Foley, an Abington alumna, is leading athletics during a transformative period. Since returning to campus in 2001, she has focused on strategic leadership, student engagement, and strengthening connections among students, alumni, and supporters. Her tenure has included successful fundraising efforts, expanded alumni outreach, and the launch of the campus Athletics Hall of Fame.
This summer, a $25 million modernization of Abington’s Physical Education Building began to enhance opportunities for student-athletes and the entire campus community. Completion is targeted for fall 2027.
The renovation and infill of underutilized space will create more than 50,000 square feet dedicated to athletics, physical education courses, intramurals, and special events. Key elements include:
-
Renovated gym, auxiliary gym, weight and training rooms designed to better support student-athletes and coaching staff.
-
New fitness and student spaces with updated equipment and expanded natural light.
-
A redesigned main entrance and welcoming public commons area with outdoor seating and improved campus connectivity.
-
Upgraded locker rooms, restrooms, and public spaces that meet current accessibility standards.
-
Full air conditioning significantly increasing its capacity for summer programs and events.
The project reflects the University’s continued investment in student success, campus life, and athletic opportunities.
The building renovation marks the latest in a series of major improvements at Abington. Over the past decade, the University's Board of Trustees has advanced the construction and renovation of its academic buildings, laboratories, libraries and recreational facilities, enhancing the learning environment and supporting student success.
Through the Abington Experience, which features leadership opportunities and hands-on learning experiences, students build the confidence, connections, and capabilities needed to prepare them for careers.
